Plug it into an outlet in the middle of the area, 20–80 cm off the floor, with its front clear. A sofa or cabinet in front of it blocks the sound. Sound doesn't pass through walls: you need one device for each room with a closed door.

No. There's no poison, chemicals or odor. Human hearing tops out around 20 kHz; the devices work above that, and most people hear nothing. Don't use it in a room with pet rodents such as hamsters, rabbits or guinea pigs, and don't aim it at where your cat or dog sleeps.
